Giulia is about to celebrate her fiftieth birthday. About to
hit the dreaded milestone, she feels as if she had become
invisible to others and was losing her sense of self. On the bus,
she observes the other passengers, who completely ignore
her. The film features a range of characters, from fourteen-
year-olds to residents of a hospice celebrating someone’s
eightieth birthday, and Giulia’s waiting guests, who joke
amongst themselves about how the depredations of the
aging process affect body, memory, and patterns of sleep.
To postpone her appearance at the party, she accepts an
invitation to go for a drink with a man she’s just met. Julia’s
Disappearance is an ensemble bittersweet comedy on the
mid-life crisis, but also pinpoints the fact that the problems of
growing up go far beyond the enduring cliches that ascribe
them to particular stages in life. This film is dedicated to the
memory of Swiss filmmaker Daniel Schmid.
