Kneecap is an ebullient, schizophrenic biopic about the Belfast-based hip-hop trio of the same name, which unexpectedly became the symbol of a civil rights movement dedicated to preserving their native language. The film thrives on the impetuosity of the rappers – Liam, Naoise, and JJ – their energetic music, anarchic irreverence, and the politically charged atmosphere of Northern Ireland. Though it occasionally wavers between authenticity and promotional flair, the film delivers enough sharp moments and humor to keep audiences engaged. While the true story is refreshingly original, the film’s sensationalist execution – marked by a fast editing and bouncing rhythm – feels like a pastiche of Trainspotting and 8 Mile, with a dash of Guy Ritchie’s gangster flair thrown in the mix.
